So you want to start hiking? Hiking is a very good outdoor activity for fun and exercise. It can be social or solitary, long or short, scenic or strenuous. It does require a bit of planning, so we have some tips below to help you get started!

Decide how long you have to hike: Pick a hike based on how much time you have – do you have the entire Sunday? Or do you just have a few hours on a Tuesday afternoon? Day hikes are best for beginners.


Decide if you’ll be hiking solo or with a friend/group – Hiking solo is a very relaxing solitary activity-however could potentially be dangerous if something were to happen or if you were to get lost. If you do go hiking alone, be sure to tell someone where you are going to hike and when you expect to return. If you’re a little more cautious, hiking with a friend or group might be best your first few times out of the gate.


Pick your location: When starting out, it’s best to stick to trails. Ask your friends if they hike and where they like to go. There are also sites such as that list trails near you.


What to wear: be sure to wear closed in shoes-sneakers or regular boots are best. Also be sure to be as covered as comfortably possible if you are allergic to anything you might come across(i.e. Poison ivy)


Extras: Make sure you pack snacks for the day, usually dried fruits and nuts, jerky, granola bars,WATER, a light jacket, make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
