Manual Lymph Drainage or MLD is a massage technique used to help individuals reduce the abnormal buildup of lymph fluid in the body. This buildup is known as lymphedema. MLD is used to promote the natural drainage of the lymphatic system through lightly applied techniques in specific patterns.

Common causes of lymphedema:

  1. The most common cause of lymphedema in the United States is the result of breast cancer, Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma surgeries and treatments. If during the treatments lymph nodes are damaged by radiation or removed through surgery, then it puts one at risk of developing lymphedema, because while the lymph pathways can regenerate, you only have a limited number of lymph nodes. Therefore the lymph fluid must find or be manually directed to another area to pass through.

  2. Allergies can cause lymph buildup in the sinuses.

  3. Sports injuries and accidental injuries can damage lymph pathways.

  4. There are certain hereditary or genetic conditions that cause lymphedema.

  5. The most common cause of lymphedema, worldwide, is a parasite that is injected by mosquitoes in tropical regions though that can be treated through medication.

Lymphedema is a progressive disease which means there is no cure, but it can be managed. Here's how!

Manual Lymph Drainage can:

  1. Reduce the effects of seasonal allergy symptoms.

  2. Flush the body of metabolic waste.

  3. Have a relaxing and analgesic effect.

  4. Reduce signs and symptoms of lymphedema like.

  5. Prevent secondary infections and other issues caused by lymphedema.

The lymphatic system is your body's first line of defense against infections so when you have lymphedema it opens you up to getting infections so it's important to keep the area clean and seek treatment.

We encourage you to look into MLD as a part of your long-term care for lymphedema, allergy treatments or just for a flushing out of the toxins in the body. Together we can help restore your body to a healthy balance.
